TLDR;
Overview
I designed a mobile app called Stitch, a video editing tool for beginners to start vlogging. My contributions for this project include hashing out the UX through UI iterations and prototyping the experience where the user opens a chapter, trims a video, and records themselves.

RESEARCH
Current solutions and AI capabilities
We looked at what video editing tools exist today to assess strengths and opportunities. We also researched AI tools to see what was feasible to integrate into our solution.

PRO TOOLS

A creator's journey
We also identified key pain points that people often face when trying to create a vlog.
[1] THINK OF AN IDEA
“I don’t know what story to tell about my life.”
[2] SCRIPTING
“I don’t know how to create a narrative for my idea.”
[3] RECORD CLIPS
“I don’t know what to record or how to record well.”
[4] REVIEW CLIPS
“There’s too many clips to sort through and review.”
[5] EDIT CLIPS
“I don’t know how to edit and it seems time consuming.”
[6] SHARE WITH OTHERS
“I’m scared to show my work or life online with others.”
IDEATION
Coming up with different solutions
The pain points, competitor audit, and AI research were the starting nodes for branching into a variety of solutions.

Fill-in-the-Slot
Initially, we thought that beginners would really benefit from a custom template where they capture clips to create a story. However, we found that this was too rigid. If the user decides to change the direction of the story, this solution isn’t flexible to their goal.

AI Vlogging Buddy
We found that many users found vlogging in public very scary. We wanted to tackle the awkward experience of talking to yourself in public by creating a companion to allow for natural conversation. We decided to pivot away from this idea as stronger solutions came to light.
AI Camera Assistant
We also considered helping the user record perfect content so that they would have less to edit later. However, interviews with content creators informed us that this wasn’t natural to their workflow, so we decided to let users make mistakes rather than capture perfect shots.

Intro
Today, we’re celebrating my friend’s birthday in Napa Valley. Honestly, there’s no better excuse to escape to the vineyards than to celebrate someone you love.

Edit the video by editing the script
A third consideration was allowing the user to edit their video by editing words so users would not have to learn how to use the video editor timeline. However, we quickly ran into feasibility concerns, asking ourselves how exactly would each clip relate to each sentence.
THE SOLUTION
Narrowing down the solution
User uploads media and frames story
There are multiple ways to tell a story, even with the same content. Stitch analyzes the content the user uploads and provides a couple options for them to tell their story.
User adds a note
User uploads media and frames story
User reviews their script and begins editing
The most important part of a vlog is the narrative, not the editing. After choosing how they want to frame their story, users review their personalized script. The clips they uploaded are auto-synced to specific parts of the script.
User opens a chapter and reviews initial script
User trims their video
User turns photo into video
User records A-roll (“the talking head”) and shares vlog with friends
In case the user does not have enough media for the length of their story, they are prompted to record themselves telling their story. At the heart of vlogs are creators themselves, so we wanted a solution that solves for missing media and allows users to tell their story.
LEARNINGS
Key Takeaways

Keep your Figma file organized
We went through so many iterations for this project. It was necessary to visualize potential solutions to such a complex problem space. But once our Figma hit 40+ pages, it became difficult to find and reference previous work that could help with the next stage of the project.
Help your teammates understand
It’s great to do research and gather valuable insights, but without communicating it clearly to your team in a digestible way (hint: not large chunks of text), the research becomes irrelevant because people are not informed enough to make decisions. It’s in your best interest to make sure everyone is caught up and on the same page!
Let’s create together.
