TLDR;

Overview

My team and I designed a mobile app called Stitch, a video editing tool for beginners to start vlogging. My contributions for this project include hashing out the UX through UI iterations and prototyping the experience where the user opens a chapter, trims a video, and records themselves.

THE PROBLEM

Everyone has a story to tell — whether they share it publicly or keep it to themselves. But video editing is not easy.

How can we empower regular people to tell the stories of their life?

RESEARCH

Current video creation tools and AI capabilities

We looked at what video creation tools exist today to assess strengths and opportunities. We also researched AI tools to see what was feasible to integrate into our solution.

PRO TOOLS

KEY INSIGHT:

Though there are a lot of video creation tools, we found that they were focused on editing, not storytelling.

A creator's journey

We also identified key pain points that people often face when trying to create a vlog. Walk through the journey!

[1] THINK OF AN IDEA

“I don’t know what story to tell about my life.”

[2] SCRIPTING

“I don’t know how to create a narrative for my idea.”

[3] RECORD CLIPS

“I don’t know what to record or how to record well.”

[4] REVIEW CLIPS

“There’s too many clips to sort through and review.”

[5] EDIT CLIPS

“I don’t know how to edit and it seems time consuming.”

[6] SHARE WITH OTHERS

“I’m scared to show my work or life online with others.”

IDEATION

Coming up with different solutions

The pain points, competitor audit, and AI research were the starting nodes for branching into a variety of solutions. See some of the explorations we considered below.

THE SOLUTION

What if you could just dump your media into one place and AI stitches a video together for you? Introducing Stitch.

User uploads media and chooses how they want to frame their story

The user starts by uploading their media (photos, videos, or notes). Stitch analyzes the content the user uploads and provides options for their story direction. (There are multiple ways to tell a story, even with the same content!)

User gets an initial script for their vlog, and begins to review and edit script

After choosing how they want to frame their story, users review their personalized script. They can review and edit the script. The clips they uploaded are auto-synced to specific parts of the script.

User records A-roll (“the talking head”) and shares vlog with friends

In case the user does not have enough media for the length of their story, they are prompted to record themselves telling their story. At the heart of vlogs are creators themselves, so we wanted a solution that solves for missing media and allows users to tell their story.

LEARNINGS

Key Takeaways

Keep your Figma file organized

We went through so many iterations for this project. It was necessary to visualize potential solutions to such a complex problem space. But once our Figma hit 40+ pages, it became difficult to find and reference previous work that could help with the next stage of the project.

Help your teammates understand

It’s great to do research and gather valuable insights, but without communicating it to your team in a digestible way, the research becomes irrelevant because people are not informed enough to make decisions. It’s in your best interest to make sure everyone is on the same page!
