Overview

My teammate and I participated in the 2021 Adobe Creative Jam hosted by Patagonia. We developed an app prototype called "$liced" that allows users to see if their purchases support fair trade through a pie chart and thus build better purchasing habits.

THE PROMPT

Challenge

Fast fashion produces clothing quickly and at a low cost. This is possible because the workers are not paid sufficient wages. Patagonia is a company that supports fair wages and hopes to inspire other companies to do the same.

Design a third-party mobile app that informs a consumer segment about brands who support living wages directly benefitting workers and their families. The solution must create a way to view measurable impact and/or progress.

Your solution should:

​

  • Educate customers on fair trade

  • Demand better supply chain practices

  • Encourage consumers to take action

  • Transparency on communities or factories where revenue is distributed

THE QUESTION

Problem

How might we educate users on which brands support fair trade? How do we encourage them to keep themselves accountable and provide a space for them to take action to support fair trade?

Ideation

We began to think about the different ways we could educate and present information on fair trade.  We considered including a page filled with articles, but felt that wasn't very engaging to users, especially those that rely on Google and different news sources.  We kept asking ourselves, "What is the purpose of the app?" and how people could use it to guide our design process. We repeatedly proposed features and any limitations before narrowing it down to our final idea.

IDEA 1:

A shopping app for shopping conscious people to identify fair trade supporting companies and support them by making brand purchases through the app.

IDEA 2:

An online platform that consolidates a series of useful articles about fair trade to better educate users on the topic.

IDEA 3:

A fintech app that breaks down the user's debit/credit card purchases into a pie chart with brands that do/do not support fair trade.

LIMITATIONS:

  • Lack of incentive to change purchases directly from brand website to a second-party app

  • Lack of options to create change

    • want to provide other contributions besides exchanging money ​

LIMITATIONS:

​

  • Competitors like Google already provides resources and articles to educate on fair trade

  • Not the most appealing way to present information

  • Lack of practical daily use and action

ADVANTAGES:

​

  • Breakdown keeps users accountable and aware of their purchases 

  • Search engine and social space allows users to discover and learn about brands that support fair trade

Final Idea

After weighing the benefits and drawbacks of each initial proposal, my team and I decided to develop Idea 3 because it had the least drawbacks compared to the other two. Then, we began to think about our target users to drive the features of our design.

TARGET USER 1: SHOPPING CONSCIOUS USERS

  • People interested in fair trade and sustainability

  • People with direct relationship to workers paid unfair wages

  • Many Gen Z advocates

TARGET'S PROBLEM:

  • No platform to recognize and hold accountability for purchases that do not support fair trade 

  • No platform to share progress, support, and learn about fair trade with other shopping conscious users

Final Thoughts

This was a fun design sprint! The designathon was hosted during finals, so Lesley and I had to balance finals while working to complete this project. Special thanks to Panda Express and Coffee Bean for powering us through! In terms of suggestions for improvement, I think we could have brainstormed separately and come together afterwards to narrow down our ideas to save time. I also think that we could narrow down the number of features in our prototype so users have a better understanding of the app's main purpose. ​But overall, I learned a lot about cohesion, depth, and other design principles while working on this prototype with Lesley. I am excited for the next designathon!
